Looking to swap the beach for something a little more active during your stay in Aruba? Hooiberg, Aruba’s iconic volcanic hill, offers a short but rewarding hike with panoramic views of the island, and on a clear day, even a glimpse of Venezuela. Rising 165 meters (541 feet) above sea level, it's not the tallest peak on the island, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable.

Getting There

Hooiberg is located in the center of the island, making it easy to reach from almost anywhere in Aruba. If you're driving, there’s a small parking area right at the base of the hill. Most navigation apps will take you directly to “Hooiberg Steps.” For the most pleasant experience, try hiking early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

The Hike

The climb consists of roughly 600 concrete steps leading up the hill in a zigzag pattern. Though the hike isn’t long, the incline makes it a good workout. Most people reach the top in 30–45 minutes, depending on pace and rest breaks. It’s a self-guided experience and completely free: no permits or entrance fees required.

What to Bring

Make your hike comfortable and safe with these essentials:

  • Water: There are no vendors or fountains, so hydration is important.

  • Sunscreen & Hat: Shade is limited, especially in the afternoon.

  • Proper Footwear: Wear sneakers or shoes with good grip.

  • Phone or Camera: The view is absolutely worth capturing.

  • Optional: Small Towel: Particularly useful on warmer days.

At the Top

At the summit, you’ll be greeted with a stunning 360-degree view of the island. From this vantage point, you can see everything from Aruba’s rugged interior to the beautiful coastline. And on clear days, you might even spot the coastline of Venezuela in the distance. A few communication towers share the space, but they don’t detract from the breathtaking scenery. There are also benches at the top to rest and soak it all in.

Tips for a Great Experience

  • Sunrise hikes are especially beautiful and cooler.

  • Go at your own pace, take breaks as needed.

  • Bring a friend for motivation and safety.

Make a Day of It

After your hike, swing by a local roadside stand for fresh coconut water or explore the nearby Casibari Rock Formations. You’re also just a short drive from Oranjestad or several supermarkets if you want to grab snacks and relax post-hike.
